Farewell to Winter 2009

30 September 2009 farewell l c.jpg

The end is the beginning, is the end. We are seeing the season out the way we saw it in, with snow. Ironic for a season that we thought at times was going to be literally a wash out, but we actually got through it all with some reasonably good riding and skiing. For me the best skiing was just after the last of our 2009 guests left (sorry had to be said).

Bloss saying farewell to last guests

 More to snow than skiing...

wild hogs.jpgWhen the snow isn't as perfect as it was last year, it is worthwhile undertaking some of the other things you can do in an alpine resort. We had some fun this year on snow bikes, bungy trampoline and dance along with Pete the Snow Dragon. Watching the Night Show Spectacular of skiers, snowmobiles, Pete and the local kids and climaxing with the fireworks was always a great way to spend Thursday nights. Even in the lodge, playing a rowdy rendition of board games can make a difference to the holiday.

 The Wild Snow Hogs

Last Falls

On 26th September the Snow Doggess, Blossom celebrated her 6th birthday the best way possible with some 30cm of fresh snow. For those that know Bloss, know her obsession with snow and the timing of this dump was perfect for her as the scrounging for snow was getting grim. To her and many guests' delight the snow came almost at the eleventh hour and ensured those at Falls Creek can ski to the very end of the season.

With the season in its final stage, it is always a time for me to reflect upon all that has passed. I was fortunate, no, blessed to be working with a great team this year. Beau and Amy dazzled us with their culinary skills; as did Nat, Alice, Jay and Monica with their work ethic, dedication and were generally all-round nice people to be with. So thank you to them all for making this a great season. To all those who also helped us out: Sam, Duncan, Heath, Rachel, Ariel and Fang; thanks for being a part of it all and helping make our lives a little easier at times. And of course it goes without saying; thanks to Nellie and Bloss for just being here and adding the Diana atmosphere.

And all of this would not be possible without, you, our guests, our friends. Thanks for staying, coming back, coming back again, and all the wonderful positive feedback you have given us. It makes everything worthwhile, and particularly for me reminds me how great this all is.

Looking forward to seeing you in 2010 - if not sooner.

Winter 2009

10 June 2009

Snow Gums at Falls Creek

aqueduct 10 june 2009.jpg

Normally we hope, sometimes we expect, and this year we received our first snowfall on cue: on the day the season is officially declared opened. And then it kept snowing for 4 days, achieving a depth of over 40 cm and more on the way. A great start for all those who love snow. It never stops exciting me, I feel like I live in fairyland as I look out upon the pristine white mountains and snowgums heavily laden with snow.

Lodge Update

Dawn on Diana LodgeWe feel that the lodge is looking smart, clean and ready to welcome some excited snow enthusiasts. The lounge room is undergoing a transformation with its new look lounge suite, encouraging us to stay in to take in the views while warming by the fireplace. For those who would like to watch television will be pleased that all our televisions are set to receive the high definition digital broadcasting and also we can now show our range movies through to all bedrooms.

Behind the scenes

Things that you won't see but will make a difference to us all are new carpet throughout the ground level, upgraded hot water system, dishwasher and venting for our kitchen and laundry.

Night Shows

The last two years we have seen the Falls Creek Night Show on Thursday nights during peak season become a must do event. At Diana Lodge we encourage our guests to go, watch, participate and (like me and some other crazy "Pete the Snowdragon" tail wearers) dance to the music. Serving an earlier buffet dinner gives everyone a chance to get prime viewing positions for the Show. Afterwards, we serve warming beverages and dessert in the lounge and continue the evening fun.

Wednesdays - "Chef's Night Off"

Last year we trialed the "chef's night off", giving our guests a chance to see more of the lunch and evening village life and fare in Falls Creek. This year this will be on Wednesdays. There are a great many dining places worth trying and we want you to be able to make the most of the opportunity. We recommend planning and booking ahead to get to the venues you want to go.

Craft and Crumbs

Opening Weekend also heralded our first session of Craft and Crumbs. For some, cold weather is about staying in; keeping warm and cosy; having a cuppa and cake; sitting, chatting and stitching then Diana is the ideal place to sit and stitch, compare needlework and sample a few tasty treats.

We are encouraging guests to bring their own project or pick up some beginner tips and kits from us for introduction to quilting or knitting at $15 each. Sessions will be limited so it always good to check if they are running.

Cookie Decorating

Cookie decorating at Diana LodgeTo keep the younger guests entertained during some cold, windy and snowy weather we hosted a cookie decorating session during Opening Weekend. The children created their edible masterpieces before baking, then putting the finishing touches on with icing. There were some very interesting and fun cookies.

We will be hosting the cookie decorating again weather permitting - when the weather is good we all want to be out skiing, when it bad some inside activities will just be what the children will be looking for.

Free Lunch

Who said there is no such thing as a free lunch? At Diana Lodge there is. That makes it even more worthwhile to come back for the lodge for a break from the skiing and snowboarding, giving yourself time to recharge and refuel for the afternoon. We think fresh is best for lunch which is why we provide homemade soups, salads and make your own sandwiches.

For those who don't want to make the trip back between 12.30 - 1.30 pm, we can make up packed lunches for you to take with you or have later in the afternoon.

Farewell Old Team, Welcome New Team

Those who stayed with us last year, or even in 2000 and 2001, will remember Adrian, chef, and his wife, Jodie, happy and extraordinary team member. Having spent a winter in the northern hemisphere they have now returned home in preparation for a sibling for their son Lewie (who we referred to as the Lodge CEO). We wish them every happiness and a healthy child.

Meanwhile, we welcome this year Beau and Natalie joining the team. Already Beau has impressed us with his menu and Natalie is personality persona of Diana Lodge - friendly, professional and obliging.
